Elementary Art

Z has been loving doing Home Art Studio DVDs for art.  We're using the first DVD, which is Kindergarten, but it works great for Z and I wanted him to get the basics before moving on through each DVD.  There are 6 grades worth (K-5th), so we will be doing this for the next few years.  Currently, we just do one lesson a week but Z is asking for more, so we may move it up to twice a week.

4th Grade Art, Music and Home Economics

Art is sorely neglected but I want to actually do the curriculum this year.  K does do art, she does do coloring, painting and crafts but we don't do art study and learn new things, so this is the year to add that back in.

Fun Dough

My mom sent K 2 Easter eggs that had "fun dough" in them.  I thought it was just play-doh, but it is actually better than play-doh in my opinion.  It doesn't crumble and get all over the floor or table and it is easy to play with, build with and smoosh and restart.  K made all kinds of different things even though she only had 2 colors and I thought I would showcase them:

Mosaics-by-Number Wooden Butterfly Wall Art

My daughter loves doing mosaics, she completed the mosaics castle a few months ago, and this past week completed another one - a butterfly.  This one was very nice and wooden and she gave it to a family as a gift.  You had to match the color/shape by number and it was for her small fingers because I couldn't seem to manage the pieces!

K's Drawings

I'm amazed at how K is advancing in art, especially drawing.  She didn't trace these!  Could be I'm just proud of my baby but I think she draws really well:

Medieval Castle With Mosaics

We bought this awesome model of a Medieval Castle and my husband and daughter put it together.  I loved how we have a model of a castle now and she also learned about mosaics at the same time!  Here it is during the progress:

Here is the completed castle and figurines:

Artistic Pursuits - Lesson 4; Artists Communicate

We finally did an Art lesson - amazing I know! :-)  K learned that artists communicate in their drawings and then she was to communicate something in a drawing and then color it with watercolor crayons.  She told me she was communicating that this was her outside, happy, about to go into her play-ship (notice she drew the red door open) that is next to her slide and then don't forget the cherry on the tree!

K's Drawings

K made some drawings all on her own and I haven't taught drawing yet, so I was amazed at what her creativity thinks up!  The last one she said was a picture of her - too cute!

Art - Lesson 2; Artists Imagine

Lesson 2 of our art curriculum was "Artists Imagine" and after reading the lesson and studying Marc Chagall's painting we did the project.  The project was to use your imagination to draw your picture, then use watercolor crayons to color it and then use the watercolor brush to magically change the "crayon" look into watercolor  paint! She loved it and it was her first time using watercolor crayons.

She drew herself with her friend ice skating on the ice and then me and her friend's mom watching them:

The watercolor crayons we use are the quality ones from the art store.  The brand we use is Staedtler's Karat Aquarell watercolor crayons.  For drawing, K uses drawing pencils with a vinyl artist eraser.

K's 1st Easel Painting

K has always painted on a table and we finally got her an easel and got the paper roll with it so she could learn to paint the way artists do.  It was challenging for her at first but she had a blast and I just let her do whatever she wanted and then she wanted me to take a picture of it for others to see.

Art, Music, Home Economics & Spanish

Below are our electives for this year.  Besides Music, they are only done once a week, with Music twice a week.

Art - we are using "Artistic Pursuits: K-3 Book One, An Introduction to the Visual Arts"  I came across this program before I even saw it was recommended in "The Well Trained Mind".  I had looked at several other art programs and was frustrated at the simplicity of them - having a child cut a picture from a paper and glue it and then color it, to me just isn't true art.  I wanted something that taught Art and gave a great knowledge of just what Art is and I have found it!  Book One even includes Ancient Art (making a Greek pot) and that will go along with our History of the Ancient times.  We plan on only doing Art once a week but if she shows a great interest, then we can do it twice.

Music - my daughter wants to learn to play the violin.  However, the instructors in our area say the child must be 7 before they can begin lessons, so since she is only 5 (6 next month), we will have to wait.  I wanted her to begin learning to play something - so we chose to start the piano this year and see how she likes it.  We are going to use "John Thompson's Modern Course for the Piano; First Grade Book".  She will also learn to play the recorder and we got one with a beginner's book and that will probably be the easiest for her to start with.

I've already began teaching about Composers with Beethoven and we are using "Stories of the Great Composers, Book 1 & CD". I also want something that teaches what rhythm, melody, etc are but haven't found the program I'm looking for yet.

Home Economics - I have taught my daughter some of Home Economics already with her being with me in the Kitchen, etc.  However, I wanted something that laid it out for me, easy for her to understand and I found it.  I'm using Pearables "Home Economics Level One".  It looks like a good basis and geared towards her age.  It is also done by an older lady sharing her nuggets of wisdom.

Spanish - My daughter already knows a lot of words in Spanish and how to count from 1-10 in Spanish but I wanted to start her in something this year that would be fun and not necessarily a complete curriculum since she already has a full year.  We are going to use "Spanish 1A" cd-rom and see how it goes.  It will be something that is part of her "Computer Time" but also fun for her as well.  We aren't going to start it until the middle of the year so she can concentrate on phonics for the next 6 months and get a good solid base in reading.
